The construction means it is durable but also breathable so the underlying grass is not killed when used outdoors. It is water repellent and dries quickly, but it does not rot, so it can be sued in the dry or wet. The thick nature of the matting and air gaps gives it a padded more comfortable feel than plain reed matting. It is complete with pegging loops on the corners allowing you to anchor it to the ground.
